Healthcare provision for refugees who have applied for asylum is normally provided in accordance with §§ 4 and 6 of the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (AsylbLG). Depending on the federal state in question, however, the costs are either billed via a health insurance certificate or the electronic Health Card. In the case of the electronic Health Card, the respective framework agreements between health insurance companies and countries apply.
The requirements set out in AsylbLG often lead to uncertainties about the level of healthcare coverage that can be provided to refugees. Therefore, we call on doctors to use the legal grey area and to treat refugees the same way as they treat German nationals.
